Kengo NAKAMURA, born in 1969, held his first exhibition in 1994, while studying Japanese Style Painting (Nihonga) at Tama University Graduate School. Since then , he has shown a series of exhibitons entitled "Japanese Frogs", "COMPOSITION TOKYO", "SPEECH BALOON", and others.

Although he usually uses traditional Nihonga techniques in his work, the motifs show a very wide variety and an untraditional style - images of toy frogs taken from package design ("Japanese Frogs"), floor plans of single room flats in Tokyo ("COMPOSITION TOKYO"), speech balloons sampled from Japanese comics (Manga) which are transformed into a pattern or a figure ("SPEECH BALLOON", "SPEECH BALLOON MAN"), symbols taken from Tokyo's subway map resembling 'Minimal Painting'! ("Tokyo Underground").

Nakamura fills his work with the unsolved contradictions he sees around him - the issues of formality in art in Japan, the issues of the Japanese mentality represented by the keywords "cute" for example, the issues of the city Tokyo, the issues of media and information and the issue of Contemporary Art itself, which is destined to become a minority culture in Japan.
